A Rush of Blood to the Head is the 2d studio album by British rock band Coldplay. Information technology was released on 26 August 2002 by Parlophone in the United Kingdom, and a day later on by Capitol Records in the U.s.a.. Recording started after the ring became pop worldwide with the release of their debut album Parachutes (2000), and i of its singles in particular, "Yellowish".[5] [6] The album was produced by the band and Ken Nelson, and makes greater use of the electric guitar and piano than its predecessor.

The album topped the UK Albums Chart upon its kickoff week of release in the United kingdom, and became the 8th biggest-selling album of the 21st century in the United kingdom.[7] The British Phonographic Manufacture has since certified the album 10× Platinum for its accumulated sales of over 3 1000000 units in the UK and the anthology has sold 15 million copies worldwide.[eight] The album spawned the hit singles "In My Place", "The Scientist", and "Clocks". "God Put a Grin upon Your Confront" was also released, just was significantly less successful.

A Rush of Claret to the Head has been critically acclaimed, and the band received three Grammy Awards for the album; the 2003 Grammy for All-time Alternative Album, which was the band's second win in a row, the 2003 Grammy for All-time Stone Performance with the vocal "In My Place", and the 2004 Grammy for Record of the Twelvemonth with the song "Clocks". In 2020, it was ranked number 324 on Rolling Stone 's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".[9] It was also amid ten albums nominated for the best British album of the previous 30 years by the Brit Awards in 2010, ultimately losing to (What's the Story) Forenoon Glory? by Oasis.[ten]

Recording [edit]

The band started recording the album in London on 17 September 2001, but afterwards relocated to Liverpool, where they had recorded some of the songs on Parachutes.[11] Pb vocalizer Chris Martin said that one time there they "became obsessed with recording".[11] "In My Place" was the offset song recorded for the album and the one that the ring released as the album's lead single considering information technology was the vocal that fabricated them want to do a second album. It kept them going and fabricated them think they could however write songs, post-obit a foreign menstruation of not really knowing what they were doing 3 months after the success of Parachutes.[11]

The opening track "Politik" was recorded 2 days following the September 11 attacks in 2001. According to an interview with pb vocalist Chris Martin, "I wrote the song on 9/xi and nosotros recorded it on 9/13. We were all, like anybody else, I suppose, a lilliputian dislocated and frightened. I get off tour and had a rest for one or ii days. Simply and then I become antsy again. I want to write songs and do things, 'cause you never know what might happen."[12] The band wrote more twenty songs in the months following for the anthology and some of those, including "In My Place" and "Animals", were performed live during the tours promoting Parachutes.[6] [13] The album's title was revealed through a post on the ring'due south official website.[xiv]

During initial recording sessions in Liverpool, lead vocaliser Chris Martin and guitarist Jonny Buckland worked lone, and only on weekends. Each Monday, they would nowadays the song ideas that they had developed to their bandmates.[11] With A Rush of Blood to the Head nearly completed, Martin went into the studio tardily i nighttime and wrote a piano riff that he has stated "just came out". The band recognised that this early version of the song, that would get "Clocks", was special the first time Martin played information technology to them. Reasoning that information technology was likewise late to include the song on the album, they recorded a demo version and included it on a CD marked "Songs for #3", featuring unfinished tracks they intended to piece of work on for their 3rd studio album.[15] [16]

By June 2002, the ring had completed A Rush of Blood to the Head, simply idea their output sounded "rubbish" and reached an agreement with the label to postpone the release of the album until they were completely satisfied.[15] [16] Subsequently, many songs were discarded because they sounded like they could have been on Parachutes. Martin has claimed that information technology would take been uninteresting: "It would have shown that nosotros're happy to sit back on what we'd done, and we're not. For us, information technology was important to progress and endeavour to improve upon our abilities as musicians." Such ambitions put the ring under strain: "sometimes practice sessions ended abruptly with one or more members of Coldplay threatening to quit".[17]

Subsequently headlining the 2002 Glastonbury Festival, Coldplay returned to the studio and worked on some tracks from the "Songs for #3" CD they had produced earlier. Phil Harvey, the band'south manager, heard "Clocks" and urged them to rework it immediately: "No, you must practice that vocal now 'cause you're going on [in the lyrics] about urgency, and you're talking well-nigh keeping this song back. That doesn't make sense."[xv] [16]

Composition [edit]

Product of the album began quickly with the writing of the track "Politik", which was a vocal seen as a reflection of the world at the time, giving the band a renewed perspective on their lives and society. Many of the song lyrics on the album relate strongly to the theme of urgency. Martin has commented that previous songs were more relaxed since they were in a comfortable land of mind: "Maybe there'due south a bit more urgency on some of these songs. And that's built-in from all the places we've been and the things we've experienced." Martin has explained. In relation to the theme of urgency, Martin has as well stated that the album'southward title means "doing something on impulse".[17]

Several songs on the album are nearly the themes of love and relationships. These tracks are based on reality, only co-ordinate to Martin, they were written with a fictional twist: "Songs are similar fairy tales: they have a beginning and an end and yous can make it all piece of work perfectly. Existent life doesn't work like that".[11]

The album includes ballads and acoustic songs featuring all-encompassing use of guitar and piano. The U2-esque "epic rock" of the anthology's opening track "Politik", the piano-driven "Clocks", the loud guitars of "A Whisper", and the country rock-inspired guitar in "Alarm Sign" were seen as an extension of the band'southward musical range.[18] Chris Martin has also stated that the anthology's title track is an homage to American singer-songwriter Johnny Cash, whom he considered 1 of "the greatest ... men with just guitars".[19] The title track is about uncertainties faced in life.[twenty]

According to Martin, the song "Dark-green Eyes" was composed for two individuals: An "American friend" (speculated to be a adult female of Chris' romantic desire), and bandmate Jonny Buckland.[21]

Artwork [edit]

The anthology cover for A Rush of Blood to the Caput was designed by lensman Sølve Sundsbø. Sundsbø had been hired by fashion magazine Dazed & Confused in the belatedly 1990s to produce a shot with a "technological experience, something all white", according to himself. Every bit an artist, Sundsbø attempted to do a unique original slice, creating a shot that had never been seen before; He suggested taking shots using a three-dimensional scanning machine to fulfil his vision.[22]

The model for the shots wore all-white cosmetic makeup, along with a coloured twill cape, to aesthetically produce optimal and desired results. The scanner could non properly identify the colors on the cape, so they were replaced with digital spikes, and the caput in the epitome was chopped equally the machine was unable to scan more than about a human foot of the model at a fourth dimension.[23] The editor of the magazine liked the prototype and eventually featured it in ane of their publications. After seeing the epitome in a publication of the mag, Chris Martin approached Sundsbø for proper permission to use the image equally the cover of A Blitz of Blood to the Head. For the album'due south singles, Martin asked Sundsbø for any ideas; Sundsbø suggested scanning the caput of each fellow member of the band.[22]

The album booklet contains merely two photos; Ane with Coldplay in a location that was rumoured to be a forest, and one with the band in a recording studio. The album cover was among the 10 chosen by the Royal Mail for a set of "Classic Album Cover" postage stamp stamps issued in January 2010.[24] [25]
